Jeanette Bradley has a Resources for Creators page that is very helpful, including this PDF about hiring and working with an illustrator if you are planning to self-publish.

If you haven't already, take a look at the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and consider joining! It is a great community to meet friends and get feedback on your kidlit journey. They have local and national conferences, critique opportunities, and great resources about the industry.
